Ep.55: What can your nutrition look like for 140 miles?

Ever had a Sport Dietitian on your race or event crew? If not, you’re in for a treat as we recap our recent race crewing experience for one of Bob’s athletes, Linda, at the brand new “Route 66 Ultrarun”. This race is 140 miles of road that follows the historic Route 66 Highway from Seligman to Topock, Arizona. You’ll get an insider perspective for what it’s like to have a Sport Dietitian on your crew along with a few surprises related to the nutrition outcomes.

We discuss:

  • The importance of doing a race recap including the nutrition component

  • Foods and fluids that were part of the primary race plan (visit our Show Notes on the website to see a list of the foods we had for Linda)

  • The experiment of using DeltaG ketone esters during the race

  • Linda’s average calories per hour for days 1 and 2 of the race, along with caffeine and fluids consumed

  • How Linda did throughout the race and our notable observations

As mentioned in the episode, we had several items in the crew vehicle for Linda including: All Around Snack CO. ENRG Bites, UCAN Energy + Protein, tortillas, avocado, apricot jam, Justin’s Peanut Butter, bananas, UCAN Edge, DeltaG Performance, RunGum, UCAN Hydrate, deli turkey. We did end up purchasing other foods for the crew that we thought she might want to try (but didn’t) like chips and pizza. She did have a teeny tiny bite of one of our massive-sized Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. :)
